Arthur Savage, an industrialist and explorer, organized the Savage Arms company in 1894 in Utica, New York. After developing the revolutionary Model 99, one of the first “hammerless” lever action rifles featuring a unique drum style magazine, Savage Arms quickly grew into one of America’s leading rifle manufacturers. Savage Arms was one of six companies to participate in the United States Army trials for a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol, and was named one of the two finalists before losing out to Colt's design, which would become the M1911 pistol. Savage marketed a series of .32 and .380 caliber pocket pistols, the Models 1907, 1915, and 1917 based on the same patents as their .45 caliber prototype. Arthur Savage believed in testing his weapons to ensure they performed as needed, a tradition which still continues today as Savage designers field test their weapons and take tips from top names in the industry.
